Born Sheryll Hickman in Millbrook, Cornwall to Cornish parents, Murray attended Millbrook primary school, and Torpoint Comprehensive school. Sheryll served as a governor of Torpoint School for 9 years, until retiring in 2008 to concentrate on the election.
Murray had previously represented Rame a Cornwall Councillor, and at the time of being elected, was a councillor for Millbrook, and was head of the Conservative group, on the now defunct Caradon District Council. She was a international representative for the Fishing Industry, representing them at local, European and world levels.
She contested South East Cornwall in 2010. She won this seat with a majority of 3,220, and a large swing of 9% from the Liberal Democrats. Murray thereafter became the first Conservative MP for South East Cornwall, since 1997, when Robert Hicks stood down, and the seat was gained by Colin Breed. Murray also became the constituency's first ever female MP. In July 2010 she opened her constituency office in Liskeard.
Her family have lived in Cornwall for generations. Her mother's family have lived in Millbrook for generations, and her father's family were originally from Calstock. She completed her education at the then Torpoint Comprehensive School before engaging on a career in the insurance industry.
Sheryll has two children, Sally and Andrew by her late husband, Cornish trawlerman Neil Murray, who died in a fishing accident on 24 March 2011.[1] Neil did not return from a solo fishing trip from Looe on the evening of 24 March. His body was found on board his boat, Our Boy Andrew following a search by local fishermen and emergency services.[2]
Mrs Murray attracted controversy in July 2010 when, not long after taking her seat, she was reported to have got drunk in the House of Commons terrace (restaurant and bar) and being rude to a Commons Doorkeeper who had offered her help. The matter was widely reported in the local, national and international press.[3][4] She has stated that she did not believe that her actions caused offence but the Tory Whips office nonetheless issued its own apology.[3]
